Why should I wash my fruits and vegetables?

Think about it a moment: you wash your hands with soap and water before eating. Common sense (and plenty of research) indicates that you should do the same for your produce. There are simply far too many questionable substances on fruits and vegetables to just rinse them.  And many of them are oil-based, which makes them impervious to water alone.

What’s on my fruit and vegetables anyway?

Much of our produce is grown with various insecticides, pesticides and herbicides that are designed to keep pests and diseases away. Many of them are oil-based, and do not come clean with water alone.  Even organic produce has residue from insects, human handling, grocery store watering systems and machines. Learn more about what’s on your food.

Why isn’t washing with water enough?

Thousands of chemicals are used daily for growing fruits and vegetables around the world and they are predominantly oil based thus water alone will NOT effectively clean the surface. Additionally, less than 1% of the produce that comes into the USA is even inspected. Other countries are still using chemicals that have been banned from the USA for decades such as DDT. It takes, on average, 12 countries or more to fill up our average produce aisle. Learn more.

If I buy organic, do I still need to wash my produce?

Absolutely. Drift from spraying on nearby conventional farms, the use of various organic fertilizers (such as cow manure), and possible mislabeling are potential hazards. There are also other potential unwanted contaminants from human handling, oils, dirt and exhaust fumes that need to be washed away.

How do you know your product is better than water?

Over two decades of independent third party testing have continuously proven that Purely Essential Fruit and Vegetable Wash removes nearly 400% more than what water alone cannot properly do.

How do I use your product?

Spray produce liberally with Purely Essential. Rub or brush gently. Rinse thoroughly.  For greens, berries or other fragile produce, spray liberally with Purely Essential, submerge in water and swish around gently, then rinse thoroughly. Get step-by-step instructions here.

When is the best time to wash my vegetables?

Wash your produce the same day you plan to eat it. Substances like wax are used to keep produce fresh longer. Purely Essential removes those substances, returning the produce to the way nature intended, so your fruits and veggies may age more rapidly than treated produce.

Are there any fruits or vegetables I shouldn’t wash?

All fruits and vegetables should be washed. Porous items such as mushrooms, strawberries, peaches, etc. should not soak in the water and/or formula; they should be cleaned per the instructions by simply spraying and wash.

If I’m going to take off the peel, do I still need to wash it?

Yes.  All produce items, whether consuming the peel or not, should be washed prior to eating. When peeling without washing, you risk introducing surface contaminants to the inside or flesh of the fruit or vegetable during preparation.

Is it safe?  What if I accidentally leave some on my produce?

Yes, our product is safe. Purely Essential contains all natural ingredients that will not harm the human body.

What does “all natural” ingredients mean?

All of our ingredients are derived from plant-based sources and are not synthetically made. They biodegrade rapidly and do not break-down into any hazardous components.

Are you Kosher certified?

Yes, we have proudly been certified Kosher Parve since 2003 through the Central Rabbinical Congress of the United States and Canada.

Will Purely Essential clean things other than fruit and veggies?

In addition to cleaning produce, many of our customers use Purely Essential as a cleaner for items such as cutting boards, microwave, refrigerator, lunch pails, even houseplants – essentially, anywhere a safe and effective cleaner is needed. Be sure to test in an inconspicuous spot prior to cleaning.
