Company History

 Purely Essential Fruit and Vegetable Wash from Environné is the original produce wash, created in 1987 by renowned scientist Dr. Donald C. Atkins.  Working mom, Diane Mahoney, learned about the product and became passionate about the need for it when she explored the impact of pesticides on child brain development.  In 1996, she purchased the company and began a David vs. Goliath fight to alleviate pesticides and toxins on the produce we eat.  Intent on making the company research-based, she continually invested in laboratory research to test the product’s efficacy, refining it over the years to assure optimum results and safety. Under Diane’s guidance as CEO, Environné became a pioneer in the emerging field of food safety, leading the way in consumer education and advocacy.  In 2014, the company rebranded its product’s as “Purely Essential” to more clearly communicate the important benefits it offers.

For more than two decades I have made it my personal quest, and the mission of our company, to protect people – especially children – against harmful chemicals on our food. As a mother of two with a degree in Special Education, I believe we owe it to our kids to make sure that the foods they eat are as free of toxins as possible.
